Activities, trivia, readings, recipes, and graphics are sprinkled throughout providing a connection for every learner. Fruits and Vegetables for Health

Newly updated to include the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and Next Generation Science Standards, Fruits and Vegetables for Health contains five lessons designed to teach students about the production, distribution, and nutritional value of California-grown produce. Students will gain knowledge in geography, language arts, science, nutrition, and math as they learn about the process through which fruits and vegetables are transported from California farms to kitchen tables. Healthy eating is emphasized throughout. Aligned to the Common Core State Standards.

This unit allows students and teachers to examine the six basic plant parts—roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits, and seeds—in a unique way. Through hands-on activities, students will learn about the different plant parts, as well as how to include fruits and vegetables into their daily meals as part of a healthy diet. Students will also learn about California agriculture and the people who produce our food.

California produces more than 400 different agricultural commodities, providing an abundance of fruits, vegetables, nuts, milk, nursery plants, flowers, fiber and livestock. According to the California Department of Food and Agriculture, our state produces nearly half of US-grown fruits, nuts and vegetables. Many crops enjoyed across the country are produced exclusively in California. Each sheet in this set introduces an agricultural commodity, plant nutrient or agricultural topic. Additionally, the sheets provide ideas for using this information in a lesson or activity.
